tertium comparationis (2007)
for rulers and rubberbands
by serge baghdassarians
the setup of tertium comparationis consists of two elements: bent rulers held in place by rubberbands. the pressure of the bent rulers to snap back into their
original (flat) position causes the rubberbands to slowly expand until they rip apart. in the moment of this ripping a rearrangement takes place: the ruler changes
its form and position and might also change the position of nearby ruler/rubber band sets. by virtue of the high tension the rubberband flies across the space to
a new location. the process of expansion/ripping takes between minutes and days for each set -
this is due to slight deviations and imperfections of the materials.
